Three days in the wooden gateway to the western fjords — Bryggen's 14th-century Hanseatic wharf, a funicular up to the Mount Fløyen plateau at sundown, a Hardangerfjord day with a 145-metre waterfall, and the salt-stained fish market that has run on the same dock for 700 years.

Day One
Fly into BGO, drop the bag at a Bryggen-edge hotel, walk the UNESCO wharf as the cruise crowds leave, then the Fløibanen funicular up to Mount Fløyen for a Bergen-from-above sundown.
●
BGO → Bergen centre transfer
Bybanen light rail Line 1 from BGO airport to Byparken/centre — 45 min, one of the cheapest airport transfers in Northern Europe. Flybussen express bus 30 min. Taxi 25 min.
●
Hotel Bryggen Tracteursted
Restored 1708 trading-house at the end of Bryggen, 6 rooms above what was the original tavern (Tracteursted = traktørstue, an inn). Half-timber walls leaning at original angles, modern beds, breakfast in the 18th-century dining hall. bryggentracteursted.no
●
Bryggen — late afternoon walk
UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 — the row of crooked colour-washed wooden trading-houses on Bergen's north wharf is what's left of the Hanseatic League's main Norwegian factory (1360–1754). Wander the narrow passages between the houses, find the artisan workshops and the dried-cod racks. Best post-15:00 once the cruise tour groups have left.
●
Hanseatic Museum & Schøtstuene
Two-site museum (currently the main building is under restoration to 2027; the Schøtstuene assembly halls are open) — the German Hanseatic merchants' guildhalls, with the open hearths where the all-male trading houses ate their winter meals. hanseatiskemuseum.museumvest.no
●
Fløibanen Funicular + Mount Fløyen
8-minute funicular from city centre up Mount Fløyen (320 m) — runs every 10 minutes until 23:00 in summer. From the top: Bergen, the seven mountains, the fjord, the islands. Walking paths up there for an hour if you want the longer view; goats roam the plateau. Buy a return ticket, or walk down. floyen.no
●
Bryggeloftet & Stuene — dinner
Old-school Norwegian restaurant on Bryggen since 1910 — wood-panelled upstairs dining room, wall portraits of long-dead Hanseatic merchants. Reindeer stew, klippfisk (dried-salted cod), cloudberry parfait. bryggeloftet.no
BGO → centre: Bybanen Line 1, 45 min; or Flybussen 30 min.
Inside Bergen centre: walking distance between Bryggen, Fisketorget, Fløibanen, most hotels.
Saturday
Day Two
Full-day Hardangerfjord loop — three hours east into Norway's most-photographed fjord arm, the 145-metre Vøringsfossen waterfall, the apple-orchard village of Eidfjord, back to Bergen by dinner.
●
Bergen → Eidfjord drive
150 km / 3 hours each way, via E16 → Rv7 — the route follows the Hardangerfjord's north shore once you pass Voss. Rental car ideal (Hertz, Avis at BGO); alternatively join a Bergen Tours "Hardangerfjord in a Nutshell" coach + boat day. fjordtours.com
●
Vøringsfossen Waterfall
Norway's most-visited waterfall — 145-metre single drop into Måbødalen valley. The 2020 architect-designed stepped bridge (Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk) crosses the gorge at the top with vertigo-inducing views straight down. Free, with paid parking. Best mid-morning when the sun lights the falls.
●
Eidfjord village + Hardanger Nature Center
150-person fjord-edge village at the inland tip of the Hardangerfjord — apple orchards on every slope (Hardanger produces 40% of Norway's cider), turf-roofed boathouses, the 14th-century Eidfjord Old Church. The Nature Center has a 20-minute film projected across three screens about the fjord landscape's geological formation. hardangervidda-natursenter.no
●
Sysendammen / Hardangervidda plateau
Drive 20 min east of Eidfjord onto the Hardangervidda — Europe's largest mountain plateau, treeless, wind-swept, often patches of snow even in July. Stop at the Sysendammen reservoir lookout for the long view back across the fjord country.
●
Pingvinen — late dinner Bergen
Cozy small-plates spot in Bergen's Vågsbunnen district, kitchen open until 23:30 — Norwegian comfort food (kjøttkaker, raspeballer, rakfisk) and an enormous craft beer list. No bookings, 20-min wait usual on Saturday but worth it. pingvinen.no
Bergen → Eidfjord: 150 km, 3 hours by car (E16 then Rv7).
Day-tour alternative: "Hardangerfjord in a Nutshell" Bergen → Voss → Hardanger boat → Eidfjord → bus back, full day.
Sunday
Day Three
Slow Bergen morning — Edvard Grieg's lakeside house and composing hut at Troldhaugen, the Fisketorget for a final salmon sandwich, then back to BGO.
●
Troldhaugen (Edvard Grieg's home)
The Norwegian composer's home on Lake Nordås, 7 km south of central Bergen — wooden villa where he lived 1885–1907, his composing hut at the lake's edge (he kept a clay frog on the piano "to grant me a good day's work"). The 200-seat Troldsalen concert hall built into the slope hosts daily summer lunch concerts of Grieg's piano works. Bus 23 from centre or local light rail. Separate entry and concert tickets. griegmuseum.no
●
Fisketorget (Bergen Fish Market)
Seven-century-old fish market on the harbour — historically the heart of Bergen's stockfish trade with the Hanseatic merchants. The indoor Mathallen hall now houses the actual fishmongers (the outdoor stalls are mostly souvenirs); king crab legs, whale carpaccio, gravlax, smoked salmon sandwiches. Lunch at the Fish Me restaurant on the upper level. fishme.no
●
Bergen centre → BGO airport
Bybanen Line 1 from Byparken straight to BGO — 45 min. Trains every 5–10 min. Arrive 90 min before EU departures, 60 min for Schengen.
