Kyoto Temples & Gion — Three-Day Slow Pilgrim

Three days through the Kyoto every photo captures — Fushimi Inari's vermilion torii tunnel at first light, the gold-leafed Kinkaku-ji reflected in mossy pond, the Arashiyama bamboo cathedral, and the Gion lantern lanes where the Yasaka pagoda glows above wooden teahouses.

The itinerary.

3 days · 18 stops
Friday
Day One

Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto (2h15), check into a Higashiyama machiya (restored townhouse), evening walk through Gion as the lanterns come on under the Yasaka pagoda.

●
Tokyo → Kyoto Shinkansen
Nozomi Shinkansen Tokyo → Kyoto: 2h15 (covered by JR Pass for the slower Hikari version, 2h45). Reserved seats book on JR East website 1 month out. Sit on the right side D-seat for the Mt Fuji view (40 min after departure, if visible).
●
Kyoto Higashiyama Machiya
Restored 100-year-old wooden townhouse in the Higashiyama district, 5 min walk to Yasaka Pagoda + Gion. Tatami floors, sliding shoji screens, futon bedding, small inner courtyard with stone lantern. kyoto-higashiyama.com
●
Higashiyama old streets — Sannenzaka + Ninenzaka
Two interlocking sloping cobblestone lanes between Yasaka and Kiyomizu-dera — wooden machiya shops (matcha sweets, ceramics, kimono), zero cars, the most-photographed walk in Kyoto. Walk them just before sundown.
●
Hokan-ji (Yasaka Pagoda) sundown
1,400-year-old 5-storey pagoda, the symbol of Gion — the lane that frames it (Yasaka-no-To) gives the canonical photo as the lanterns turn on at 18:00. Free to view from outside (interior visit).
●
Gion night walk + Hanami-koji
Hanami-koji is Gion's main lantern-lit lane — wooden ochaya (teahouses) where geisha (geiko in Kyoto) still entertain. Real geiko sometimes hurry between appointments at 18:00–19:00 (do not photograph them — Kyoto enforces a fine). Free walk.
●
Yoshikawa tempura — dinner
Counter-only tempura house in a 1930s machiya near Gion — 9 seats, 1 chef, 12-course tempura kaiseki. Book 2 months out at kyoto-yoshikawa.co.jp. Smart casual.

Saturday
Day Two

The big-three-temple day — Fushimi Inari at sunrise (before the buses), Kinkaku-ji + Ryōan-ji rock garden in the morning, Arashiyama bamboo grove + Tenryū-ji + monkey park in the afternoon.

●
Fushimi Inari-taisha — sunrise
10,000 vermilion torii gates climbing 233 m up Mt Inari. Arrive 06:30 — the lower gates empty out, the full 4 km circuit takes 2 hours. The Yotsutsuji intersection at midpoint gives the Kyoto city view. Free, open 24/7. JR Nara line to Inari (5 min from Kyoto Station).
●
Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)
1397 zen temple, sheathed in pure gold leaf, reflected in the Mirror Pond (Kyoko-chi). Rebuilt 1955 after a monk burned the original (Mishima wrote a novel about it). 30 min visit. Bus 205 from Kyoto Station, 40 min.
●
Ryōan-ji rock garden
1500s Zen kare-sansui ("dry landscape") garden — 15 raked-gravel stones arranged so only 14 are ever visible from any angle (you must "realise" the 15th). Sit on the temple veranda for 20 silent minutes. 10 min walk from Kinkaku-ji.
●
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
500-metre path through 70-foot-tall moso bamboo on the western edge of Kyoto. Best 07:30 (empty, light filtering) or 17:30 (Lantern Festival December). Free. Train: JR Sagano line Saga-Arashiyama (15 min from Kyoto).
●
Tenryū-ji + Sōgenchi Garden
1339 head temple of the Rinzai Zen Tenryū school — its Sōgenchi pond garden uses the technique of "borrowed scenery" (shakkei), framing the Arashiyama mountains as part of the garden. UNESCO. Garden and main-hall entry.
●
Iwatayama Monkey Park
30-min climb up the hill across the Togetsukyo bridge — 130 wild Japanese macaques live free on top, the city of Kyoto laid out below. You feed them through wire mesh from inside a small hut.
●
Ogura-yama Kappō Sakurai — dinner
Small kaiseki counter overlooking the Hozugawa river in Arashiyama — 8 seats, 9 seasonal courses. Book 2 months out. kappo-sakurai.com

●
Tsujiri matcha + Nakamura Tōkichi
Tsujiri (1860, Gion branch) for matcha parfait + warabi mochi. Or Nakamura Tōkichi (Uji branch, 30 min south by JR Nara) for the original Uji-tea ceremony experience — Nakamura was Uji's tea-quality grader in the 1850s.
●
Kiyomizu-dera
Cliff-edge wooden temple founded 778 AD (current building 1633) — the main hall sits on 13 m wooden pillars without a single nail. UNESCO. Get there by 08:30 to walk Sannenzaka + Ninenzaka uphill without the crowd.
●
Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) + Philosopher's Path
