BodrumStory N° 54
Bodrum & Datça — Two Aegean Peninsulas
Three days down the Türkiye Aegean — yachts and bougainvillea in Bodrum's old harbour, then a slow drive west across the pine-edged Datça peninsula to a 6th-century BC Carian port where the road ends at the sea.

Friday
Day One
Land Milas-Bodrum, settle into a stone boutique in the Bardakçı bay backstreets, then the late-afternoon Bodrum loop — Castle of St. Peter, the old marina at sundown, dinner up in Gümüşlük with your feet on the sand.
●
BJV → Bodrum transfer
Milas-Bodrum (BJV) is the closest airport — daily Turkish Airlines and Pegasus from Istanbul (1h05), seasonal direct from London and many European hubs. Pre-booked transfer (40 min), HavaŞ shuttle (50 min) to Bodrum centre.
●
Bodrum Castle (Castle of St. Peter)
Built in 1402 by the Knights Hospitaller using stones quarried from the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus next door — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, with the 14th-century BC Uluburun shipwreck cargo: ingots, glass beads, Cypriot bronze. muze.gov.tr
●
Old marina (Bodrum Yat Limanı) — sundown walk
Walk west from the castle along the old harbour as the sun drops behind the marina — gulet sailboats lined up by the hundred, fishermen pulling in nets at the far end. Stop at one of the harbour cafés (Limon, Maça Kızı's Bodrum branch) for a glass of rakı and meze.
●
Mimoza, Gümüşlük
Family-run seafood institution in Gümüşlük, 30 min west of Bodrum centre — tables on the sand, the boat that caught your dinner moored 10 metres away. Mezze tray, then whatever was best at the morning market — usually levrek (sea bass) or çupra (gilthead). Reservations essential June–September. mimoza.com.tr
●
Gümüşlük — Rabbit Island sundown
After dinner, walk out across the shallow stone causeway to Tavşan Adası (Rabbit Island) — the submerged walls of ancient Myndos are 1 metre below your feet. Snorkel-deep ruins, dramatic sunset across the bay.

- Bodrum centre ↔ Gümüşlük: 25 min by taxi or local dolmuş from Türkkuyusu otogar (every 30 min).
Saturday
Day Two
Drive west across the Datça peninsula on the D330 — the road locals call "the wine glass" for the cliff-edge curves over the gulf. Lunch at a fishing village halfway, check into a stone house in Eski Datça by mid-afternoon, evening at Datça harbour.
●
Bodrum → Datça drive (via Bodrum-Datça ferry OR road)
Two options: (1) Bodrum-Datça hızlı feribot from Bodrum Centre to Körmen (Datça's north port), 90 min, foot passengers and cars, May–October only. (2) Long road via Muğla — 4 hours of mountain switchbacks and pine forest, brutal but stunning. Most people ferry; drivers love the road.
●
Akyaka — lunch stop (if driving the long way)
Tiny Aegean village on the gulf 2 hours into the drive — wooden Ula-style houses, the Kadın Azmağı river running through. Lunch at Halil'in Yeri — gulf prawns, grilled mullet, ezme. maps.google.com
●
Mehmet Ali Ağa Konağı, Reşadiye
1809 Ottoman aga's mansion in Reşadiye village (3 km from Datça centre), restored as a 22-room heritage hotel. Cypress courtyard, stone fireplaces, the original ahşap konak (timber-and-stone) construction. Breakfast on the orange-tree terrace. kocaev.com
●
Old Datça (Eski Datça) — afternoon walk
5 min from the hotel — the original 18th-century village, cobbled lanes, bougainvillea over every stone wall, half a dozen ateliers (ceramic, leather, hand-loomed cotton). Coffee at Datça Kahvecisi, the village's almond-coffee speciality.
●
Datça harbour — evening
Drive down to Datça port (Iskele) for the sundown ritual — fishing boats reflecting in the still water, gulets tied up for the night. Dinner at Culinarium (slow food, Cretan-influenced from the post-1923 population exchange) or Zekeriya Sofrası (fish + meze in the old courtyard). culinarium.com.tr

Day Three
Drive the peninsula west to Knidos — the ancient Carian port at the very tip — swim at Palamutbükü on the way back, then ferry or fly out from Bodrum.
●
Datça → Knidos drive
40 km / 1 hour west along the spine of the peninsula — pine forest, almond groves, blink-and-miss-it villages (Yazıköy, Yakaköy). The asphalt narrows the further west you go; rental car ideal.
●
Knidos Ancient City
6th-century BC Carian-Greek port at the tip of the peninsula, where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean — once home to Praxiteles' Aphrodite, the first nude female sculpture in classical art. Two harbours (commercial + military), an amphitheatre cut into the cliff, Demeter sanctuary above. Open 08:30–19:00. Almost no shade — go before 11:00.
●
Palamutbükü Beach — swim + lunch
On the way back, drop into Palamutbükü — a 2 km pebble beach on the south coast with the clearest water on the peninsula. Beach restaurants line the back: Mehmet'in Yeri does grilled octopus and rakı under the tamarisk trees.
●
Datça → BJV or return ferry
Two options: (1) Drive to Körmen and take the 18:00 ferry back to Bodrum (90 min) then short taxi to BJV. (2) Drive direct Datça → BJV via Marmaris — 3.5 hours, do this only if your flight is late and you want to skip the ferry queue.
