The fairy-tale Fisherman's Bastion gives the best panoramic views of Pest, Parliament and the Danube. The castle district's cobbled streets are beautifully preserved.

Budapest's most famous café since 1858 on Vörösmarty Square. The Esterházy torte and Dobos torte are two of Europe's great cakes. Grand, slightly touristy but essential.

Great Market Hall, Parliament exterior and departure

Budapest's magnificent 1897 covered market. Ground floor for fresh produce and paprika, upper floor for folk crafts, embroidery and Tokaji wine to take home. Foie gras here is half the price of Paris.

Europe's third-largest parliament building — a Neo-Gothic masterpiece on the Danube. Interior tours available but exterior from the waterfront promenade at Kossuth tér is the classic view.
