The itinerary.

4 days · 11 stops
Friday
Day One

Start in Lecce, the 'Florence of the South', where the whole old town is carved from soft golden limestone into wild baroque flourish.

●
Basilica di Santa Croce
Stand under the most exuberant baroque façade in Italy — a riot of griffins, cherubs and foliage cut by hand from Lecce stone over a century.
●
Roman amphitheatre & Piazza Sant'Oronzo
See the 2nd-century arena half-excavated in the middle of the living square, layers of the city stacked in plain sight.
●
Pasticciotto at a local bar
Break a warm shortcrust pastry filled with custard — the Salentine breakfast, best eaten standing at the counter with an espresso.

Day Two

Head up into the Valle d'Itria for the surreal cone-roofed trulli of Alberobello and the blinding white hilltop of Ostuni.

●
Trulli of Alberobello
Walk a whole district of drystone houses topped with grey conical roofs, a UNESCO village that looks built by hand for a fairy tale.
●
Ostuni white city
Climb the lime-washed lanes of the città bianca as they glow at golden hour above the olive plain running down to the sea.
●
Dinner of orecchiette
Eat the region's ear-shaped pasta with turnip greens or a rich meat ragù, poured over by a carafe of Primitivo.

Day Three

Drop to the Adriatic for the cliff-hung old town of Polignano a Mare and the mosaic-floored cathedral of Otranto, Italy's easternmost town.

●
Polignano a Mare cliffs
Look down from the whitewashed old town onto Lama Monachile, the tiny beach wedged in a limestone gorge over impossibly clear water.
●
Otranto cathedral mosaic
See the vast 12th-century floor mosaic — a Tree of Life spanning the whole nave — in the cathedral of Italy's most easterly town.
●
Swim off the rocks
Slip into the Adriatic straight off the flat limestone shelves, the water so clear the boats look like they float on air.

A slow last morning back in Lecce for the pieces you missed, then out through Brindisi.

Lecce papier-mâché workshops
Look in on the cartapesta artisans who have shaped the city's famous saints and figures from paper and glue for generations.
●
Caffè con ghiaccio & almond milk
Order the Salentine summer ritual — espresso poured over ice with almond milk — before the road to the airport.
