Monday
Day One

Land in Boston, pick up the rental, drive north on I-93 through New Hampshire into Vermont's Green Mountains. Dinner in Stowe village.

●
Boston Logan rental pick-up
Pick up an SUV or wagon — winding mountain roads need clearance, especially after early-October frost. Plan a 3h 30m drive to Stowe via I-93 N + I-89 N.
●
Hen of the Wood, Waterbury
30 minutes before Stowe — farm-to-table flagship inside an 1835 grist mill. The hen-of-the-woods toast and Vermont raclette are the menu's permanent fixtures. henofthewood.com
●
Stowe village
White-steepled Community Church on the green, the Helen Day Art Center, and Edelweiss Mountain Deli for tomorrow's picnic provisions.

Tuesday
Day Two

Drive Smugglers' Notch at first light, climb Mt Mansfield, lunch at Trapp Family Lodge, then chase covered bridges through Stowe Hollow.

●
Smugglers' Notch Scenic Drive (Route 108)
The pass closes November–May for snow; in peak foliage week the gorge fills with maple and birch fire. Pull-outs at Bingham Falls and the Notch overlook. Drive it at 07:30 for empty road.
●
Mt Mansfield Auto Toll Road or Gondola
Vermont's highest peak (1,339 m). Toll road for the panorama, gondola for the chairlift photographer's angle. Wind kicks up after 13:00 — go early.
●
Trapp Family Lodge
The Austrian-style lodge built by the von Trapp family in 1968. Bierhall lager, Tyrolean pretzels, and the lawn view across the Worcester Range. trappfamily.com
●
Emily's Covered Bridge
Stowe Hollow's haunted bridge (the legend's part of the visit). Continue to Gold Brook and Cody Hollow covered bridges — a 90-minute loop with four total.

●
Green Mountain Byway (Routes 100 + 14)
The most-photographed VT route — running south from Stowe through Waterbury, Warren and Bridgewater. Time the morning fog burn-off around 09:30 for the layered hill colors.
●
Cold Hollow Cider Mill, Waterbury
Hot cider donuts pulled from the fryer every 12 minutes, free cider tasting flight, and 50+ Vermont cheeses. The maple syrup grades are educational. coldhollow.com
●
Sleepy Hollow Farm, Pomfret
The Instagram-famous farm — red barns nestled in maples beside a still pond. Approach is a quiet country road; respect the owners' 'no trespassing' signs and photograph from Cloudland Road only.
●
Quechee Gorge
Vermont's Little Grand Canyon — 50 m drop into the Ottauquechee River. Walk the rim trail before continuing south on Route 4.
●
Mountain View Grill at Woodstock Inn
The Woodstock Inn's dining room — game-and-orchard menu pairs Vermont apples with venison and roast pork. Book a window table at 19:30.
