Solo Travel Destinations — Three Days, One Backpack, No Compromise
Solo travel is up 7% year-over-year (Booking 2026) — and not just for backpackers. The fastest-growing solo segment is 35–55, choosing one-week + getaways with their own pace, their own table, their own room without negotiation.
These 59 itineraries are the ones we'd send to a friend going alone for the first or the fifteenth time — walkable city centres, hotels where you don't feel sized-up at breakfast, restaurants with counter seating where dinner-for-one is a known thing. Kyoto's Higashiyama, Reykjavik's harbour, Lisbon's Alfama, Marrakech's medina riads.
Safety is a feature: every itinerary lists the neighbourhood to stay in, what the late-night walk home looks like, and where the local helplines are. We've tried to name the trips that solo women find as easy as solo men do.

Solo travel — FAQ
Safest destinations for solo female travel?
Reykjavik, Copenhagen, Bergen, Utrecht, Kyoto, Tokyo (Hakone), Sevilla, Lisbon. Crime rates are low + the late-night transit + walking is normalised. Each itinerary names the neighbourhood to book.
Will I feel awkward eating alone?
In the destinations we recommend, no. Kyoto omakase counters, Reykjavik harbour cafés, Lisbon tascas, Marrakech riads with shared dinner tables — all designed for solo diners. We flag the few where dinner-for-one is awkward and suggest counter-seat alternatives.
How do I meet people solo?
Walking tours (the friendly version — Free Tour Lisbon, Sandeman's, Strawberry Tours) are the universal way. Hostel common rooms still work (HUB Mardin, Reykjavik Loft) even if you book a private room.
Are these too expensive for solo budgets?
Most of these are $$ or $$$, designed for a single-person split. We add a "Solo cost note" in each itinerary where the hotel single-supplement is harsh — and suggest an alternative (Marrakech riad single, Lisbon Airbnb 1-bed, Bali single jungle villa).
Best solo destinations for first-time solo?
Lisbon, Copenhagen, Sevilla, Reykjavik. Walkable centres + low language barrier + busy public spaces + safe nights. Build confidence on these, then expand into Marrakech, Buenos Aires, Kyoto.
